Writing Intent
At Woodchester Endowed Church of England Primary School, we:
- Teach children to 'be writers'; we believe that the mastery of written language is a powerful gift and that it should be purposeful, rich and enjoyable for all.
- Promote enjoyment and a love of writing.
- Recognise that writing can be stimulated in a number of different ways and is supported by reading, speaking and listening, drama and personal experiences.
- Want writing to have purpose for the children. We plan cross-curricular writing opportunities as these give writing a clear purpose and meaning.
- Promote engagement with experiences, discussions, visits and use high-quality texts which are mapped each year and reviewed annually.
- Use writing to awaken an awareness of the world; we explore texts from different cultures and countries and use these as a stimulus for our writing.
- Provide children with effective feedback that is timely.
- Teach children that writing is a process and includes planning, drafting, editing and revising.
- Learn spelling patterns and strategies and teach children to use these in their writing.
Writing Implementation
- At the heart of each writing session is a high-quality text. We use CLPE's Power of Reading to support our writing. This is carefully mapped out in our long term English plans; we ensure that we cover a range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction writing.
- A range of teaching strategies are used, including: opportunities for oral rehearsal, drama, storymapping, book talk, shared writing, writing in role and peer and self-assessment. These are mapped out in our long term English plans.
- Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation activities are, as far as possible, fed into the writing activity and outcome intended.
Spelling
- The teaching of spelling is through Monster Phonics in EYFS and KS1.
- Spellings are taught daily in EYFS and KS1.
- Superhero Spelling is used in KS2 and follows on from Monster Phonics. From Year 3 onwards, the children have short, regular spelling lessons each week.
Handwriting
- Fine motor skills are developed in the EYFS and continued when necessary.
- In the EYFS, 'Ready to Write' routines and single, print letter formations are taught.
- Handwriting is taught using a cursive style from Year 1 onwards.
- Daily handwriting sessions ensure that handwriting is taught explicitly and regularly.
- We use Letter-join and encourage parents and carers to use the Letter-join resources at home.
Assessment
- Writing is assessed using the Woodchester age-related expectation framework (Year 1, 3, 4 and 5) and National Framework assessment criteria (Year 2 and 6).
- Writing in the EYFS and KS1 is often recorded using Seesaw.
- Writing data is gathered three times a year and recorded using our tracking system, Insight.
Promoting a love of writing
- Regular celebrations of writing include our Writer of the Week for each class and the Rotary Young Writer competition.
