Harvest Thanksgiving Service
The bringing in of the Harvest is celebrated across the world – Sukkot in Judaism, Pongal in Hinduism, the Yam Festival in Nigeria or the mid-Autumn festival in China which celebrates the 8th new moon of the lunar year.
In the Christian church, Harvest festivals have been celebrated since ancient times. Traditionally, farmers would make loaves of bread from the new wheat crop and give it to their local church where they were then used as the communion bread during a special thanksgiving service, saying thank you to God.
Whilst we visit the supermarket or use online shopping services, it is easy to forget the toil, nurture and care that goes in to growing our food. At Harvest time Christians say thank you to God and remember that we are all very lucky to share in His wonderful earth. Christians also remind themselves that we all have a responsibility to think about and care for others too.
Thank you very much to all who brought gifts of food and other items into church. These were passed on to the local Foodbank and will be used to give local families a helping hand.
