SCIENCE FOCUS WEEK
Following on from the success of gaining PSQM, the whole school celebrated the theme of ‘Growth’ as part of Science week. Everyone tried to answer the question, ‘Do older people have bigger heads?’ on Day 1 with some surprising results!
The general prediction across the school was that yes – older people do have larger heads! However, it was found not to be the case. Ash Class lined up in order of head circumference but found that some of the younger children had bigger heads. They even enlisted the help of Corrina’s mum to measure baby Kit’s head too! In Beech, Hawthorn and Juniper classes, all the children enjoyed using their cross-curricular Maths skills to measure and record information. Willow Class discovered that some of the children’s head circumferences were larger than Mrs Loomes’ measurement! They then talked about how the skull is formed, what skulls looked like in pre-historic man and why the head changes in size as we grow.
During the rest of the week, Hawthorn class investigated what grows in the shade and outside the shade of trees, whilst Beech class examined different types of seed and how they grow. They then enjoyed planting cress in egg shells to see how the seed developed. Juniper class enjoyed looking at what is required to live on Earth and then designed creatures that would survive on Mars.
A very busy, scientific week was had by all!
