Woodchester Endowed Church of England Primary School
Platinum Jubilee Celebration Week
Monday 23rd May to Friday 27th May 2022
Monday 23rd May—Collective Worship
Our week began with Collective Worship and an opportunity to put the Jubilee into context. We learned what a jubilee is and why Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee is so special. She is the first British monarch in history to ever reach this milestone (70 years!), which is quite amazing.
We learned how the United Kingdom will celebrate the Jubilee with a special bank holiday, a birthday parade, a service of thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral and a Platinum Party at Buckingham Palace. Celebrations will end with a Platinum Jubilee Pageant and lots of Jubilee lunches happening all around the country.
Monday 23rd May School Council Platinum Jubilee Fun Run
The School Council organised a Jubilee Fun Run during the afternoon. Children and staff came to school dressed in red, white and blue to mark the occasion and everyone was invited to bring a donation. At Woodchester, we love to spend time with children other year groups and this was a perfect opportunity to do so. Three runs were organised with Ash and Willow running together, followed by Beech and Juniper, and finally Hawthorn Class. We are so lucky to have access to the cycle path from the village, just a short walk from school. The vegetation was lush and vibrant and provided us with a lovely safe setting for our run. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to the School Council for organising our Platinum Jubilee Fun Run!
Wednesday 25th May
Recreating the Coronation in Ash Class
Children in Ash Class recreated events during the Coronation, acting out various parts including the role of the monarch, coachmen and horses, and Lords and Ladies in Waiting.
Just as on the day itself, all those years ago, the heavens opened and everyone took shelter from the rain!
Friday 27th May
Crown Competition and Parade
Children were invited to design and build a royal crown and bring it into school during our celebration week. As the week progressed, more and more crowns appeared until we had a wonderful variety of crowns to appreciate. Every crown was a joy to behold and we know just how much time and energy went into creating them. Mr Harris very kindly agreed to come and judge a winner and runner up from each class. What an impossible task! Every child who entered our crown competition and took part in the crown parade during the afternoon tea party received a certificate of thanks. The prize winners received a commemorative bookmark and medal.
Enormous thanks to everyone who took part and brightened up our afternoon tea party with their wonderful creations. You are all amazing!
Friday 27th May
Platinum Jubilee Tea Party
The whole school gathered together in the back playground to enjoy a royal afternoon tea party. Proceedings began with children taking their place on the horseshoe shaped tables. Many children were dressed in red, white and blue and some even came in royal costume!
Each class performed, as part of our ‘Dances from the Decades’, to music from the 1950s, all the way to the present day. This was very entertaining and ensured everyone had a very enjoyable time. There were lots of different styles of dance on display and music ranged from Elvis to the Spice Girls! Her Majesty would have loved it!
Following ‘Dances from the Decades’, we had our crown parade. This was an opportunity to admire all the different crowns, announce the prize winners and present certificates and prizes. Thank you to all children who joined in and helped to make our crown competition such fun.
During the afternoon, Georgie from the Village Events Committee and a Foodbank volunteer arrived to collect the donations so generously given earlier that morning. They were extremely grateful to families at Woodchester School for supporting this vital service.
Before tucking into cucumber sandwiches, savouries and cakes we stood and sang the National Anthem together. We hope that all our children enjoyed this special week, learning about and celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee together. More photographs will be available on the school website in the near future.
Have a wonderful Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday!
Friday 27th May
Woodchester Village Platinum Jubilee Trail
During the extended Bank Holiday, as part of the village celebrations, families could follow the Woodchester Platinum Jubilee Trail, searching our London and royal inspired artwork by our classes.
Did you spot a corgi, Buckingham Palace and a London bus?
