Religious Education at Woodchester
The 2017-2022 Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education has at its core, the 'Principal Aim for RE'. That is, 'to explore what people believe and what difference this makes to how they live, so that pupils can gain the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to handle questions raised by religion and belief, reflecting on their own ideas and ways of living.'
At Woodchester, we follow the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus as we value these aims and believe that this contributes enormously to our own school visions and children's understanding of our core Christian values: Respect, Responsibility, Friendship, Forgiveness, Truthfulness and Trust.
When creating learning opportunities in Religious Education, we seek to inspire, enthuse and motivate children to 'dig deeper' into the key questions that concern religions and faith to help them explore what it means for them to be members of the human race, their own personal beliefs and what makes them unique as individuals.
The Important Thing About RE...
The important thing about RE
is that it helps us to understand how different people live.
It is about respect,
It is about reflection,
It is about curiosity.
But the most important thing about RE
is that it helps us to understand how different people live.
Inspired by 'The Important Book' by Margaret Wise Brown.
Worldviews
At Woodchester, we recognise that the concept of 'Worldviews' is intrinsically important within our teaching of the RE curriculum. All of our pupils, families and staff come to our school with different experiences of the world which, in turn, shape their individual worldview.
It is our different perspectives and unique experiences that help to shape our wonderful school community.

Theology, Philosophy and Social Science
We believe that Religious Education is a multi-disciplinary subject that incorporates aspects of theology, philosophy and social science.
Theology - Questions about belief
Philosophy - Questions about life
Social Science - Questions about how and why people live in a certain way
At Woodchester, we aim to promote the spiritual, moral and cultural development of our pupils by exploring these questions in relation to a variety of different religions and worldviews.

Understanding Christianity
At Woodchester, our RE teaching is supported by the Understanding Christianity framework. This resource helps our children to explore significant theological concepts within Christianity as part of developing their wider religious, theological and cultural literacy.
The following Christian concepts, represented by the icon cards, are considered across all ages.
- Gospel
- Fall
- Salvation
- Creation
- God
- Incarnation
- Kingdom of God
- People of God
The Big Frieze
'The Big Frieze' provides a visual and engaging way for children to unpick the core concepts of Christianity and how they fit into the biblical narative. Children are introduced to the 'The Big Frieze' at the start of their school journey and build on their understanding as they progress throughout the school.
