Modern Foreign Languages at Woodchester Endowed CE Primary School

"Languages are an essential part of a broad, balanced curriculum.  Not only do they provide an opportunity to communicate more effectively with others, they also help children to understand what it is to be a global citizen."

We believe that learning a modern foreign language will contribute to our school's Christian Vision, ensuring that our children, 'Love, Learn and Flourish Together', enriching their lives and experiences.

Woodchester Endowed Church of England Primary School uses the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes. All pupils will be expected to achieve their full potential by encouraging high expectations and excellent standards in their foreign language learning - the ultimate aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond key stage 2.

The four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across the primary phase. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning and also helping the children improve overall attainment in other subject areas.

The intent is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences. The intention is that they will be working towards becoming life-long language learners.

Teaching and Learning in French contributes to our Vision through:

  • Opportunities to learn knowledge and skill – Our French curriculum gives pupils opportunities to develop and demonstrate substantial progress in their listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar skills (5 language skills) and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. It also enriches the curriculum, providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic, curious learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. The natural links between languages and other areas of the curriculum can enhance the overall teaching and learning experience. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained make a major contribution to the development of children's oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture/s and those of others. Language also lies at the heart of ideas about individual identity and community, and learning another language can do a great deal to shape children's ideas in this critical area as well as supporting the development of literacy skills and understanding in their own language.
  • Awakening awareness of the world around us - As the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. Learning languages provides children with a greater understanding of the world community and a sense of global citizenship. Pupils learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. By making comparisons, they gain insight into their own culture and society. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world. Our chosen language is French.
  • Developing high expectations and raising aspirations- We aim to ensure that pupils of all abilities develop solid foundations in these key language learning skills - properly preparing them for the next stage of their language learning journey. These skills will develop children’s ability to understand what they hear and read and enable them to express themselves in speech and writing. We will extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the similarities and differences between the foreign language they are learning and English.
  • Understanding how to live safe and healthy lives- We will also help strengthen their sense of identity through learning about culture in other countries and comparing it with their own.
