Computing in KS2

Computer Science – Within KS2, children will learn about the different parts of different types of computers. They will create algorithms and programmes to complete different tasks and be able to debug and fix as required. They will develop computational thinking skills.

Information technology – Children will explore and learn how to use different software to create images, videos, web pages, games and office products. They will use logical thinking to explore software independently whilst making predictions based on previous experience. They will gather and analyse data and understand how it can also be gathered using technology in remote and dangerous places.  They will learn how computers are used in the wider world.

Digital literacy – Children will be able to recognise that not all information in the internet is true and that some sources are more trustworthy than others,, They will identify possible dangers online and be able to stay safe whilst evaluating the pros and cons of online communication.

Computing systems and networks – Children will learn the differences between different types of digital device. They will study networks and understand the importance of servers in sharing information both within closed networks and across the internet. They will learn how data is moved round the internet and the positive and negatives of different search engines. Children will also study the history of computing from the use of code breakers during World War II to technological advances during the 20th and 21st centuries such as WiFi and streaming.

Programming – Children will learn how to programme using robotic toys such as ProBots and OhBots as well as tools such as Scratch, Logo and Python. They will understand how to create code, test and fix code as well as use repeat programmes to automate where possible. Children will learn about the importance of variables so that programmes can respond to user input in different ways. They will learn how programmes can be used for different purposes from controlling traffic lights, to writing music to controlling robots on Mars.

Creating media – Children learn how to take good quality digital images whilst also learning how to edit and enhance images and video. They will also learn how websites are built and how media can be used to make websites informative and interactive.  Sound also plays an important part in digital media and children will learn how to edit, trim and use sound clips.

Online Safety – Children learn that not everything is true and that the internet can be an important tool to share facts, beliefs and opinions online.  They also learn the importance of using privacy settings to protect information as well as understanding how to use social media safely and that age restrictions apply.

Data Handling – It is important that children learn how computers can be used to handle, manipulate and control large amounts of data in a logical, structured and orderly manner. Topics include the use of data handling in ‘big data’ scenarios both around the world and in space.  They learn how data can also be seen in traditional structures as well as more modern patterns such as barcodes and QR codes.
